Agenda Item: VII.D.

Consider/Approve Amendment to Board Policy #6.202 – Home Schools

Background Information:

During the latest legislative session, the General Assembly passed Public Chapter No. 499 relating to home schools. The law extensively revised the nature of home schools; however, the recommended TSBA policy is not materially different than the Board’s current policy. The annual notice of intent to home school a student must be received prior to the commencement of each school year (previously prior to August 1) and a parent who wishes to home school his/her student must possess a high school diploma or a GED (previously the parent had to possess a baccalaureate degree to teach grades 9 – 12). To bring our current policy into compliance with Public Chapter No. 499, we need to replace our current policy with TSBA’s recommended policy.

Staff Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the above-noted amendment to Board Policy #6.202 – Home Schools, on second and final reading.
